*If you’re looking for my times tables packs, they’ve been expanded, improved and are going to be sold as a book via Bloomsbury in 2022!* As you can see from this visual that I created, everything from fractions to algebra requires at least some quick multiplication and division fact recall. I had a scour through the maths curriculum, and it was interesting just how many different concepts required a really strong knowledge times tables. They’re one of those things that children just have to learn, but without always understanding WHY they learn them. Times tables can sometimes be overlooked. Link to the resources can be found here: I’ve also made array posters which I will display on my working wall and annotate with facts on post-it notes across the week.
My hope is that with regular practice, children will begin to become more fluent with manipulating the facts that they are learning. Here is the worked example of what that could look like: This means that every year, each child will revisit the same facts but going into more depth and linking it to the learning of their current year group. Here are the main skills that I identified for each year group.Īs a school, we will then focus on one multiplication fact at a time (moving up to 2 a week once the system is established) by spending a few minutes a day sharing the above concepts and building up to a comprehensive understanding of the fact. I then looked through the curriculum and decided what each year group should be able to do with a multiplication fact. With 66 facts, there are enough to focus on two a week for a year. First, I divided the times tables up and ordered them into how I would focus on them: starting with the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, then moving on to the rest until all 66 facts have been covered. In order to build fluency in times tables, I decided to look at what times tables could look like across the school. The more confident children are in them, the easier they will often then find tackling other concepts much easier.
I’ve shared this times table poster before showing where times tables are used across the curriculum.
